false. Although it is dangerous, snakes are generally not smart enough to say “I should stop eating this because it’s still alive”. Constrictors and venomous snakes generally wait until the food is dead before devouring but sometimes they get overzealous and just eat without bothering to kill it before hand. Colubrids (gartersnakes, ratsnakes, etc..) seem to care even less about if their food is dead or alive when eating. Many garter snakes will eat live toads and slugs on a regular basis. Eventually the prey animal dies from suffocation or something similar…

In a nutshell: Hungry snakes don’t give a F*ck if their food is still kicking…
